All covered up and nowhere to go? Teens today are stepping up and proving that modest styles can be very fashionable. Empire waists with long flowing bottoms, baby doll tops, longer skirts and higher shirts are becoming the norm of most teen fashion.

“I personally think it’s less awkward when girls aren’t ‘baring it all’ when they walk down the halls,” freshman Angela Ellis said.

Ellis recently transferred from Manheim Central and noticed a few changes in the dress code.

“Some teachers here are talking to the girls about how they dress, and I thought that was interesting,” she said.

Some seem to display their sense of fashion more conservatively.

Junior Sarah Somple said, ‘Girls that wear those really skimpy clothes are really brave or just trying to show off.”

Maybe young women like the attention they receive from provocative clothing.

What they don’t realize is that many males notice the way they dress and maybe misinterpret their intentions.

“Girls all have their own styles. It shows what kind of person they are and nothing should change that,” sophomore Raul Ortega said.

For instance, People magazine interviewed males about female styles. The magazine found that most men indicated that when women dress more conservatively, they are showing respect for themselves and their bodies.

Males in this study were shown pictures of scantily clad women as well.

“I think it looks like they’re trying too hard,” one of the participants said.

“Girls need to know that how they dress is a reflection of their character,” senior Mason Brandt said. “The reality is, how girls dress shows how they want to be treated.”
