Some people start to play instruments in hopes of becoming famous. Some are expected to play instruments by their parents. For senior Nate Koach, playing three different instruments is simply because it is fun and relaxing.

Koach has been playing the guitar for five years, and the harmonica and the mandolin for about two years. He was inspired to play these instruments by listening to the radio.

“I would listen to music and want to play the instruments too,” Koach said.

He likes to practice his instruments as often as he can in his bedroom or basement.

“I usually play every day, sometimes for hours,” Koach said.

He said that one of his biggest accomplishments was playing in the talent show last year.

“Performing in the talent show was such a rush. It was really fun, and I definitely plan on doing it again this year,” he said.

Koach’s friends like the unique quality of his music. Junior James Bard said his music is unique and diverse.

“The kind of music he plays is not often heard around this area. He’s a beautiful man with a beautiful tune,” Bard said

Senior Oliver Thayer concurred with Bard.

“Nate sings like an angel and is magnificent on the guitar,” Thayer said.

Koach appreciates the sounds of artists such as Bob Dylan and Jackson Brown, not only for their instrumental talents, but also for their lyrics. Koach has written an estimated 10 songs by himself. He bases some of his songs on how he is feeling.

“If there is something on my mind, I write about it. Other times it is random. I try to keep it new,” Koach said.

Though he does not plan to make a career in music, he will not stop playing anytime soon.

“You never finish learning an instrument. I can only keep practicing and continue to learn,” Koach said.
