Spelling Bee (Scripps) - Intelligencer Journal/Lancaster New Era


  

Participation Levels...

Pupils in 6th, 7th or 8th grades of any school district/association located in Lancaster County shall be eligible, provided they have not attained their 16th birthday on or before the date of the Scripps National Spelling Bee finals, which will be held the week of May 23, 2010.

Each school must be registered, with the SNSB fee of $99 paid, prior to sending a speller to the written-test portion of this competition. Schools are asked to register online between August 17-October 16 at www.spellingbee.com. (Registeration after these dates could incur a SNSB late fee.)

Thursday, October 22, 2009, local School District/Association Spelling Bee Coordinators' Meeting, located at Manheim Township Middle School, 4 p.m.

Saturday, February 20, 2010 - Last day for School District/Association Spelling Bees to be held in Lancaster County.

Monday, February 22, 2010 - Last day for Spelling Bee Coordinators to submit names of semi-finalists to NIE, who will take the written-test component. Students are asked to bring their signed, Posed Photography Consent, with them to the test. A parent/guardian is requested to remain with the semi-finalist.

Wednesday, February 24 (Snow date-February 25)-5:30-6:40 p.m.; Manheim Township Middle School, School Road (Neffsville), Lancaster. Semi-finalists' written test component (100-word written test. Approximately 50 words come from the 2010 Spell It! The remaining 50 words are selected from Webster's Third New International Dictionary and its addenda section, copyright 2002, Merriam-Webster (Webster's Third)

  • 5:30 p.m. Registration begins; semi-finalists will be photographed. Students are asked to bring their signed, Posed Photography Consent , with them to the test. A parent/guardian is requested to remain with the semi-finalist.
  • 6:40 p.m. Registration concludes; semi-finalists arriving after registration will not be permitted to take the test.
  • 6:50 p.m. Semi-finalists escorted to the testing area. Parents remain in the auditorium. 
  • 6:50-8:00 p.m. Testing

Monday, March 1, 2010 Spelling Bee Finalists announced online.

Friday, March 5, 2010 Bee Kits mailed to Spelling Bee Finalists.

Friday, March 26, 2010 (Snow date-March 27)-Intell/New Era Championship Spelling Bee; Registration for spellers: 5:45 p.m.; Program begins at 7 p.m., Manheim Township Middle School.

  • 5:45 p.m. Finalists' registration begins; finalists escorted to holding area after registering. 
  • 6:15 p.m. Finalists' registration concludes; late arrivals will not compete in bee.
  • 6:20 p.m. Finalists' meet with Intelligencer Journal Photographer.
  • 6:30 p.m. Finalists' meet with Pronouncer.
  • 7:00 p.m. Spelling Bee begins. Champion competes in Scripps National Spelling Bee.
