Helping Children Learn to Read and Read to Learn Lancaster Newspapers, Inc. offers up to 300,000 free newspapers (25 percent of the school population) each year to Lancaster County schools and teachers through our News Plus Program. Free newspapers are available from the combined Intell Journal /New Era and Sunday News. Besides receiving our newspapers, we encourage you to take advantage of our free lesson plans that can be used in conjunction with our newspapers. In addition, NIE hosts a number of activities and events that promote literacy and showcase student achievement. Examples: Literacy Day, Constitution Day Video, Journalism and Design an Ad contests, Intelligencer Journal Spelling Bee (a Scripps affiliate), and Student Press Awards, just to name a few.
